Pitch Perfect Pooches

Famed Russian psychologist Ivan Pavlov studied dogs closely. You might be familiar with the concept of a “Pavlovian response,” which refers to a conditioned reflex; he developed it while researching what triggers dogs’ salivation. He also found from his research that dogs have perfect pitch. It seems to be something that was passed down from their wild ancestors, as wolves are also known to have absolute pitch, a trait they use to recognize and communicate with others in their pack.
This German dog (and bird) owner decided to test her dogs’ musical ability by teaching her two Golden Retrievers how to play the notes she recites to them on a piano, imitate the tune she plays on an ocarina, and even read notes off a paper. It’s pretty mind blowing, especially when I think about how after 10 years of piano lessons, I am far from being able to recognize notes without reading sheet music.
