Bunnies & their Artful Counterparts Look for Homes

The rescue world is overflowing with animals that need homes. While it sucks that so many pets are homeless, it’s during crunch times like these that you see the ingenuity of the rescue community. This Saturday East Bay Rabbit Rescue will host an adoption event in which their adoptable bunnies (they have 32!) will be featured alongside original artwork of a few of the bunnies. Bay Area artists lent their talents to the group, using each of the available rabbits as muses for orginal works of art.
The bunnies and their painted pals will be shown off at the East Bay SPCA in Dublin from 11 am to 4 pm tomorrow. If you can’t bring a rabbit home, consider buying one of the artworks. Money from the sales go to help East Bay Rabbit Rescue do the wonderful work that it does.
Humane Society Rescues 150 Cats Living and Breeding in a Single Home
Hoarding situations are never a good thing; especially when what’s being hoarded are animals. I understand completely how people get into these situations. It’s incredibly hard to turn away from an animal in need. I myself have lived with up to 7 cats in a small studio apartment because I couldn’t bear not to help a transient cat in need. Was it a good idea? Probably not, but did it help a few cats avoid the needle at Animal Care & Control? Yes.
Problems arise when people keep taking in cats without placing those already at home. Seven cats can quickly explode into double digits, and in the case above, triple digits. While I don’t judge those who choose to live with mucho gatos (hey, if you can, more power to you!) if you don’t get them spayed and neutered then we have a problem. What do you expect is going to happen when you have a dozen of so unaltered cats living under one roof? Hello!
The above clip is from a rescue effort the Humane Society recently completed in Powell, Wyoming. More than 150 cats were found living and breeding in this dilapidated home, with multiple litters struggling to survive in bookshelves and rafters. Many cats were suffering from eye and upper respiratory infections, and many were severely emaciated. The cats are now getting the vet care they need and looking for forever homes. Look out for today’s Pawesome Pound to see who’s ready for adoption.
The Humane Society cannot do this amazing work without the help of donations. If you can spare some change to help the HSUS please do!
Go See Dinosaur Bicycle to Help Save Hazel!
SF peeps looking for something to do this weekend – Go to the Hemlock Tavern on Sunday, August 29!! Our dear friend Laura Beck (of Vegansaurus, SF Vegan Bakesale, The Bold Italic, etc.) and her band Dinosaur Bicycle are playing their very first show. But the part that you probably need and want to know, it’s a benefit for Laura’s dog Hazel who needs a very expensive TPLO — tibial plateau leveling osteotomy, in case you were wondering — surgery for a torn ACL (anterior cruciate ligament). All the money raised from the show will go to help pay for the medical fees.
Extra incentive to go? It’s only $5! Free vegan cupcakes and cookies! And Dinosaur Bicycle is sure to be an amusing trainwr… er, amazing sonic wonder to behold! Red Light Circuit, a band that is going to open for Hanson next month, is also playing.
Be there!
Yggdrasil Urban Wildlife Rescue Center Needs to Be Rescued Itself
Oakland’s Yggdrasil Urban Wildlife Rescue Center needs help! Earlier this month the 10-year-old center that saves 600 urban wild animals a year got word that it will evicted from the property where it cares for injured animals. This is really bad news for Oakland/Alameda/Berkeley squirrels, deer, skunks, possums, raccoons, and other wild animals that share the area with people; many of these creatures are not taken in by local city shelters, and if Yggdrasill closes, most of these animals will have to be euthanized.
The eviction date is about a month away, on September 22. The reason for eviction? The building’s owner is taking the house off the rental market under the Ellis Act. And unfortunately, Yggdrasil Urban Wildlife Rescue Center does not yet have a new location to move into. A property has been found that would be perfect for the new rehab center, but it’s just out of reach: The place is selling as a “cash-only” sale and Yggdrasil needs to raise over $150,000 in order to buy it!
Yggdrasil has started a fundraising effort, but can use your help with outright donations, organizing fundraisers, writing letters to city officials, help moving, help rebuilding the new wildlife center in its new location, or with brainstorming with new ideas for possible solutions for finding a new place.
My Cat’s Too Sexy for This Shirt
Buzzfeed posted awesome photos from this Wednesday’s happening at the Algonquin Hotel in NY (HQ for Dorothy Parker and her Vicious Circle), when it celebrated the 15th birthday of its cat mascot (cascot?) Matilde. Although party guests weren’t allowed to bring their own furry pals, the festivities included a cat fashion show. I’m usually not a huge fan of dressing up animals, but I kinda wish I had been there — it looked a little bit WTF, but a little bit awesome, too. And there was a worthy benefactor for the event — proceeds from the night were donated to North Shore Animal League so at least none of the cats suffered in vain.
Roxie! How Can You Say No to This Face?
Bay Area peeps — this beautiful AKC-registered German Shepherd, Roxie, is looking for a home. I grew up with an amazing German Shepherd, so these dogs still have a very strong grasp on my heartstrings! And Roxie’s story is an especially sad one — she was rescued from living her life in a tiny storage room as a guard dog. That is no life for this majestic creature! Fortunately, she’s in better hands (Rocket Dog Rescue) but she still needs a forever home.
If you’re interested in fostering her, or better yet, taking her home for keeps, please contact Pali at Pigeonsloveme@gmail.com or text (415) 756-8188. Please note that she’s best for homes without other animals.
