ModPet Brings Design Within your Pet’s Reach

A while back Sarah and I guest blogged on Etsy’s The Storque. In our Guest Curator post, we found the cutest Etsy crafts made with either pets or pet lovers in mind. I fell in love with everything we picked, and if my bank account wasn’t so low already, I would have surely wiped it clean buying all that we curated. One of the items that really stood out for me was an amazing sectional couch scaled down for pets.

I recently wrote a post about ModPets’ first set of pet beds on ReadyMade. When I sent the link to ModPet creator, Ken, he sent me a link back of his latest creation, a mid century day bed. Not only is it absolutely adorable, but it’s made with faux leather (something a semi-practicing vegetarian can appreciate!).

How to Safely Use a Flea Collar to Kill Blood Suckers

Ever since I started letting our cats outside we’ve seem a dramatic increase in the flea population in our house. By dramatic I mean from none to… a lot. While Gizmo and Pookie can tolerate their monthly dose of Revolution, Dim Sum can’t. She has an allergic reaction to chemical dosing methods that manifests itself in a rash and hair loss in the location the medication was squirted on. Obviously that kind of reaction means I have to skip the topical solution, so what’s a cat lady to do?

I haven’t had much luck with alternative medicines. Buck Mountain Herbal Gold Powder uses azadirachtin found in the neem tree to kill and discourage the blood suckers from hoppin aboard. Unfortunately it needs to be applied pretty regularly to have an effect and Dim Sum, while patient, has her limits when it comes to powders. She also doesn’t seem to be a fan of neem, as she avoids parts of the couch, which once were her fave, when I’ve sprinkled some of the powder on it. She also flipped when I tried to spray Only Natural Pet’s Herbal Defense Spray, which has neem oil as a main ingredient.

My other experiment into the world of natural flea killers led to disaster, when I realized, only after applying Sentry’s Natural Defense and seeing my cats foam and gag at the mouth, that 4 out of the 5 ingredients in this topical are toxic to cats. Great. Since Ineed to beat the fleas infesting my poor Dim Sum (and us humans as a result) any time I hit a pet store I make sure to ask the people working there what they suggest. My last trek to one of my local spots, Stone’s Pet Shop, got me a fantastic tip for anyone else battling an in-home invasion.

Bunnies & their Artful Counterparts Look for Homes

The rescue world is overflowing with animals that need homes. While it sucks that so many pets are homeless, it’s during crunch times like these that you see the ingenuity of the rescue community. This Saturday East Bay Rabbit Rescue will host an adoption event in which their adoptable bunnies (they have 32!) will be featured alongside original artwork of a few of the bunnies. Bay Area artists lent their talents to the group, using each of the available rabbits as muses for orginal works of art.

The bunnies and their painted pals will be shown off at the East Bay SPCA in Dublin from 11 am to 4 pm tomorrow. If you can’t bring a rabbit home, consider buying one of the artworks. Money from the sales go to help East Bay Rabbit Rescue do the wonderful work that it does.

This Week’s Picks from Dumb Friends League
The Pawesome Pound

Sonia’s post this morning about the Humane Society rescuing 150 cats from a hoarder’s home sparked my interest in the Dumb Friends League, an animal rescue group in Denver, Colorado, that took in 60 of those cats. The org’s name, of course, also warrants questioning — what’s up with that?! The Dumb Friends’ site quotes Anna Sewell’s much-loved horse novel, Black Beauty: ““We call them dumb animals… for they cannot tell us how they feel, but they do not suffer less because they have no words.” The league was founded in 1910, back when the term “dumb” meant unable to speak, and the group’s mission statement is to speak “for those who cannot speak for themselves.” In any case, the quirky name might also help people remember the rescue group — the largest animal welfare organization in the Rocky Mountain region that is not only a no-kill shelter, but an open-admission shelter. No animal brought to Dumb Friends League is turned away!

About 12 of the 61 cats that DFL received on Sunday, August 29, are available for adoption at the DFL’s Quebec Street shelter. Go check ‘em out or fall in love with one of the many other adorable adoptables. Read the rest of this entry »

Four Creative Ways to Display Pet Photos
Pet Projects

I have a ridiculous amount of photos of my pets. It’s gotten worse since purchasing a dSLR camera. There isn’t a moment I haven’t convinced myself isn’t the perfect Kodak moment. Unfortunately, I’m at a bit of a loss as to what to do with all these images. Sure, I share them in the Pawesome Flickr pool and include them in posts here on the site, but what about when I want to enjoy my digital snapshots in the analog world?

I recently got a chance to test out a few printing services for a New York Times story on the very subject. While testing, I found that each provided a great tool for those looking for creative ways to display snaps of their pets. After the jump, a look at a few of my favorite photo printing services for pets!

Best Legs at the 2010 Rabbit Hopping Championships

Welcome to the world of competitive bunny jumping. I didn’t even know this existed until I read it on Door Sixteen, but boy am I happy I know about it now! I love the pep talk that happens at about the 30 second mark.
