Taking the Foster Plunge

Maybe it’s because of I’ve grown frustrated with seeing so many of my facebook friends post pictures of their new purebred puppies or maybe it’s because I’m a little lonely with my fiance traveling so much for work but last week something got in me and I volunteered to take in my first foster dog. Her name is Nadia (that’s her in the picture) and I pick her up this weekend. I’ve been thinking about fostering for a long time and when I read Nadia’s story on facebook, it just tugged at my heartstrings. Before I knew it, I was emailing the rescue group volunteering to foster her. Read the rest of this entry »

Cactus Jack Finds a Home

Yikes! Did you hear about Cactus Jack? The 8-week-old Yorkie-terrier puppy who was found caught in a Cholla cactus in Arizona? A resident in the neighborhood of south Phoenix (near Seventh Ave. and Dobbins Rd.) pulled Jack from out of the pokey plant after hearing the pup’s cries. By the time the Arizona Humane Society, the puppy was rescued, and a five-gallon bucket was filled with the cactus spines. AHS took Jack with them to remove the rest of the spines from his body and make sure the pup was healthy to find him a new home. Not suprisingly, more than 70 people were interested in adopting the adorable little dude. The Humane Society decided to hold a drawing, and on Thursday, Jack went home with Phoenix resident, Sara Messerschmidt. Here’s hoping for some less spiky times in this lil’ dude’s future.

An American Dog in Paris

Many dog breeds lend themselves well to merchandise and design, and the sleek Boston terrier is definitely one of them. I’m usually not a fan of the dogs-doing-people-things meme, but these fundraiser postcards by illustrator Lili Chin got me good. It’s the artistic interpretation of at least three loves: BTs, France, and cute things. As Lili explains on her website Doggie Drawings, Boston Terrier Rescue France asked if she could make something “French-themed.” And, voila.

In 2010, we raffled a custom portrait from Doggie Drawings, so we’re no stranger to this wonderful work. If you didn’t win but have been itching for a custom portrait, here’s how to commission a Doggie Drawings illustration. And, heart melter: 10 percent of all commissions go to the Boston Buddies rescue in Southern California.

Amazing Dog Rescue Leads to Amazing Comment Thread

Sometimes the comments on a post rival the actual post content in entertainment.

Last Thursday, Jalopnik posted a series of tweets and photos from Travis Heying, a photojournalist for the Wichita Eagle/Kansas.com who had just spent 2.5 hours tweeting updates from the scene of a heroic dog rescue. When Jalopnik posted the series of the tweets and photos in their Off-Topic but Awesome section, readers responded by posting mock up images and captions. They were priceless.
