Celebrating Adopt-a-versaries

Prepare yourselves, I’m about to to let my crazy dog lady flag fly: I celebrate the day I adopted my dogs (or as we call them, adopt-a-versaries). A few days ago my boy Sox, celebrated his 2nd adopt-a-versary. We like to keep these celebrations light, we might buy the special pup a new toy or give them there very own walk sans dog siblings, nothing too big since logically I know my dogs have no idea what we are celebrating. My favorite way to commemorate is to take a few minutes and reminiscence over some of our favorite memories, like the time that Sox jumped onto my father-in-law’s lap just so he could fart on him (and being the model of super matuarity, I still laugh every time I think about it).

So spill, who else celebrates their pet’s birthdays and/or anniversaries?

  • When we had just one dog, we made a big deal of her birthday. We’d either take her out to McDonalds or have a party at home. (I have a photo of everyone sitting around a table with party hats on.) As the dogs increased, the celebrations got lumped into one big party a year. Now that we have cats too (and we’re much older), most of the parties have ceased. We also had friends who used their little Yorkie’s birthday as an excuse to throw a big annual party. That was a lot of fun too.

We adopted our 2 cats on the same day, which we celebrate every year on what we call Happy Home Day, a clever name someone else coined/I stole. Nothing too elaborate, a can of wet food for dinner and perhaps a new toy, pretty much a repeat of the holidays ; )

That’s pretty much what we do for our pups too. Also, I love the name “Happy Home day”! I wish I had thought of it…

  • I totally celebrate Adopt-a-versaries. I try to give a special treat and take some time to reflect on the last year. I just had my second dog Joey’s 1-year Adopt-a-Versary. His anniversary just happened to coincide with the adoption of my first foster dog. I thought that was a fitting way to celebrate.
