Table Manners
Behind the Meme

Parents love when their kids make them gifts — even more so when the gifts star their furry grandchildren. For their mother’s birthday, Kristian Septimius Krogh and his sister produced a short film starring their two pups, Nono and Sia. Similar to the famous William Wegman photos of his Weimaraners posed with human limbs, Two Dogs Dining in Busy Restaurant features Nono and Sia, siting at a dining table wearing sweaters, while Kristian and his sister hide behind them, providing the pups with arms and opposable thumbs. “I have seen William Wegman’s work, but it did not really inspire this video,” says Kristian. “Really it was the dogs themselves that were the source of inspiration. And making our mother laugh, naturally.”

As the clip continues, the dogs patiently sit, holding their heads in their hands and occasionally tapping their fingers on the table as they wait for their meal to arrive. Once it does, they amazingly hold back from digging right in, mouths first, instead allowing their hands to fork the food into their mouths as only the most civilized of mutts do.

While you’d think keeping these pups calm when their dishes of meat and potatoes arrived would have been the biggest challenge, Kristian says it was actually more difficult for he and his sister to coordinate their hands with Nono and Sia’s positions. “Everything had to be done by intuition and from feeling the dogs’ movements.”

The siblings uploaded the video to YouTube for their mother in January, assuming it would only be shared among a few friends. Six months later, it’s been viewed more than 4 million times. “The response has been fantastic and we were very surprised,” Kristian says. “A few people just don’t get it, and that’s ok. We are all different.” What’s there to get? Dogs dressed as humans = adorable viral hit!
