Dogs on a Tight Leash in New Jersey
In the state of New Jersey, pets must now be restrained while riding in the car or face a fine up to $1000 (yikes!). New Jersey joins a short list of states that have laws governing the issue of dogs in cars. It may sound like a silly law but dogs can be a major distraction on the road and if something were to happen, a loose dog in the car can have dangerous consequences for the dog and humans in the vehicle.
There are numerous types of restraints and buckles available to keep dogs secure while riding in the car. My dog Joey rides in his crate and Happy goes in his soft carrier which is secured in place with the seatbelt. I try to be pretty good about this but sometimes, I admit, it’s easier to just let them lie on the seat. Well, Happy anyway. That Joey is always on the move so he stays crated at all times. If I ever find myself moseying into New Jersey, I’ll be sure to buckle everybody up.
