She’s a Family Dog
Behind the Meme

When it comes to TV tastes, most pets prefer animal-oriented programming. With that in mind, it shouldn’t have come as much surprise to Jamie Kang and her husband, Eugene, when their bulldog, Bullet, took a liking to Family Guy. After all, one of the main characters is a dog. A talking dog at that.
It turns out the animated comedy is one of the few shows the two-year-old pup will stay up for (Dr. Phil, on the other hand, puts her straight to sleep). Finding the whole thing hilarious, the couple set Bullet up on the couch to sit like a human. “We weren’t shocked with the sitting posture since the couch is pretty ancient and stiff,” says Jamie. “But what really got us was that she learned how to use the arm rest on her own.” In August 2010, with video camera in hand, the couple filmed their furry couch potato sitting back and enjoying an episode. Naturally the next step was to upload the footage to YouTube for family and friends.
Jamie’s mom shared the video with her coworkers and pals through Facebook, and within days the video had a few thousand views. By the end of the month, thanks to a shout out by Ellen DeGeneres, as well as mentions on Ryan Seacrest’s and Alicia Silverstone’s blogs, the video crested a million (almost a year later it’s near four million views). “We really never imagined that anyone outside of our friends and family would ever see it,” Jamie shares. While show creator Seth MacFarlane sadly hasn’t reached out to the Kangs, a few members of the Family Guy staff sent the couple notes with their blessing.
Bullet has plenty of other tricks up her sleeve, including dancing when sung to, but Jamie says, “so far everyone in our family is too embarrassed to sing on film to get that video made.” Sounds like the Kangs need some encouragement from an American idol. Back to you Ryan Seacrest.
