It’s Adopt A Guinea Pig Month!
If you’re looking for a pet, but a large one isn’t what you’re looking for, perhaps you might consider a guinea pig. After all, March is Adopt A Guinea Pig Month!
A lot of us don’t realize how many small pets there are in shelters that are in need of adoption and a loving home to scamper around. In case you haven’t heard the word, guinea pigs have a serious amount of personality and can make a really fuzzy and cute addition to your family. If you’re even considering taking one of these little fur balls in there are plenty of places for you to adopt from, probably right under your nose.
Consider looking through Pet Finder (type Guinea Pig in the “breed type”) or do a quick Google search of “guinea pig rescue” or “guinea pig adoption” in your area. If you are on the East Coast and are looking for a Tri-State guinea pig to take home, places such as The Critter Connection or the North Jersey Guinea Pig and Hamster Rescue are great places to start. If you’re living large on the West Coast, the Orange County Cavy Haven or LA Guinea Pig Rescue are worth looking at. As always, you should take the time to research the people or facility that you are adopting through. It’s well within your rights to ask questions so make sure you are supporting a good cause!
To learn more about Guinea Pigs and whether or not you think they would be the right pet for your home, scoot on over to the ASPCA to read up on what it takes to properly care for this months most adoptable pet.
And stay tuned for Sonia’s Pawesome Pound round-up on Wednesday, featuring six adorable adoptables from various rescue groups and shelters.

Folks interested in bringing guinea pigs into their home might first want to check out our list of questions entitled “Are Guinea Pigs Right For Your Home?” (http://www.ctguineapigrescue.org/adoptions/aregpright). Experience has shown us that if there’s a mismatch between your home, lifestyle, and a guinea pig’s needs, you’ll find the deal breaker somewhere on our list.
In addition to our website and blog (http://guineapigconnection.typepad.com), potential adopters can find excellent care information on Guinea Lynx (http://www.guinealynx.info) and on Cavy Spirit (www.cavyspirit.com).
