Artists Take on Garfield

While Heathcliff outshines Garfield in my eyes, I’m still a fan of the fat cat who loves to hate Mondays. The cartoon tabby became a Sunday comic fixture in the 80s, appearing in newspapers nationwide as well as a series of television shows. As a result, the lasagna obsessed kitty has a permanent place within the hearts of those of us who grew up during the Reagan era.
While there have been attempts to give the grouchy feline a modern makeover (yes, I’ll remind you all of Bill Murray’s voice acting in the 2004 CGI feature film, Garfield: The Movie) his natural state, as a flat panel character, has remained his most popular place in pop culture. To celebrate the 80s icon, the online magazine and clothing line, The Hundreds, has opened up a pop-up store dedicated to all things Garfield. Tomorrow night, the store opens up a special exhibition, in which artists like Barry McGee, Dave Kinsey, Saelee Oh, and Nate Frizzell show their own Garfield interpretations. After the jump a sneak peek at some of the work, along with info on the show.
