This Week’s Picks from Dumb Friends League The Pawesome Pound
Sonia’s post this morning about the Humane Society rescuing 150 cats from a hoarder’s home sparked my interest in the Dumb Friends League, an animal rescue group in Denver, Colorado, that took in 60 of those cats. The org’s name, of course, also warrants questioning — what’s up with that?! The Dumb Friends’ site quotes Anna Sewell’s much-loved horse novel, Black Beauty: ““We call them dumb animals… for they cannot tell us how they feel, but they do not suffer less because they have no words.” The league was founded in 1910, back when the term “dumb” meant unable to speak, and the group’s mission statement is to speak “for those who cannot speak for themselves.” In any case, the quirky name might also help people remember the rescue group — the largest animal welfare organization in the Rocky Mountain region that is not only a no-kill shelter, but an open-admission shelter. No animal brought to Dumb Friends League is turned away!
About 12 of the 61 cats that DFL received on Sunday, August 29, are available for adoption at the DFL’s Quebec Street shelter. Go check ‘em out or fall in love with one of the many other adorable adoptables.
