Dogs Behind Bars Can Be a Good Thing

Earlier this week, our pals at Vegansaurus posted about a new documentary that I really want to see: Jail Dogs in 1C. The film, released by Karmalized Pictures (an eco-friendly, vegetarian film company), focuses on Operation Second Chance, a program created and run by the Society of Humane Friends of Georgia and the Gwinnett County, Georgia, Sheriff’s Office that partners shelter dogs on the brink of being put down with carefully screened inmates at the county jail. The dogs are not only trained by the inmates, but they are with them, 24/7, during the program, to become socialized and therefore more adoptable. On the other hand, the men learn how to train dogs, but also experience responsibility, and in some cases, self-worth. Both humans and dogs get companionship, affection, unconditional love, and purpose from the program; it’s a second chance for both inmate and death row doggy.

I heard a Fresh Air episode about a similar program called Puppies Behind Bars last August (before Pawesome was born, otherwise I woulda posted about it! I love you Terry Gross!). Puppies Behind Bars pairs puppies with prison inmates — who also live with and train the puppies —but in this case to become bomb-sniffing dogs, or service dogs for wounded vets.

See a clip from Jail Dogs in 1C after the jump.

Hello My Name Is… Levi

How I got my name: After much contention between her owners, Levi was decided upon as the most appropriate name for me…just because.

How we met: A friend of my owner had found me loitering at the lobby of her apartment block, and you know, it’s as they say; the rest is history.
