Yggdrasil Urban Wildlife Rescue Center Needs to Be Rescued Itself

Oakland’s Yggdrasil Urban Wildlife Rescue Center needs help! Earlier this month the 10-year-old center that saves 600 urban wild animals a year got word that it will evicted from the property where it cares for injured animals. This is really bad news for Oakland/Alameda/Berkeley squirrels, deer, skunks, possums, raccoons, and other wild animals that share the area with people; many of these creatures are not taken in by local city shelters, and if Yggdrasill closes, most of these animals will have to be euthanized.

The eviction date is about a month away, on September 22. The reason for eviction? The building’s owner is taking the house off the rental market under the Ellis Act. And unfortunately, Yggdrasil Urban Wildlife Rescue Center does not yet have a new location to move into. A property has been found that would be perfect for the new rehab center, but it’s just out of reach: The place is selling as a “cash-only” sale and Yggdrasil needs to raise over $150,000 in order to buy it!

Yggdrasil has started a fundraising effort, but can use your help with outright donations, organizing fundraisers, writing letters to city officials, help moving, help rebuilding the new wildlife center in its new location, or with brainstorming with new ideas for possible solutions for finding a new place.
