Hello My Name Is… Dim Sum

Name, age, sex, breed: Dim Sum, 4 years old, female, calico

Owner, city: Sonia and Bruce, Pacific Grove, Ca.

How I got my name: When I found Dim Sum tucked behind a garbage can in Brooklyn I immediately sent a photo of her to Sarah. She joked that the skinny kitten looked Asian. A big fan of food names, I decided to name her Dim Sum.

How we met: While walking Lulu around my Brooklyn neighborhood I spied a little kitten hiding behind a trash can. She was scared and crazy hungry, so obviously I had to do something. I ran Lulu back to the house, grabbed a box and some gardening gloves, and sprinted back to the garbage can. When I picked up the little munchkin, she resisted but then passed out in my hands. I brought her back, opened up a can of wet food and she scarfed it down. A few minutes later she puked up her food along with a collection of rubber bands and passed out again. I sat in the bathroom with her in my lap hoping she would pull through. The next morning, at the vet, she was given fluids and a full check up. While starved, she was going to make it.

Personality type: Standard calico. Super affectionate, yet totally bitchy. She’s not a big fan of other cats, especially other cats that want her attention (ahem, Gizmo). She’s a one woman show. She does like to be doted on by us humans and often meows and jumps up near you (but never on you) to be rubbed.

Siblings: Gizmo and Pookie, though she lived with Lulu until she passed away last August, as well as a revolving door of foster cats.

Pet peeves: Being picked up or trying to be seduced by Gizmo.

Favorite place to lounge: On our living room couch, behind the curtain so you can’t see her. We call this Dim Sum’s office. When we’re all in bed she likes to sit, chicken-style, directly on top of my chest.

Favorite foods: Darwin’s Raw Chicken Cat Food

Forbidden indulgences: Plastic bags. She loves chewing plastic bags.

Strangest habits: She loves being outdoors now that we moved to an outdoor-friendly area*. When we don’t let her out (during times of intense sun or at night) she’ll open up all the closet and cabinet doors thinking that there must be a secret Narnia way to the great outdoors.

Stand-out physical feature: Her pink nose and pink paw pads. You just want to nuzzle them all day.

Things you might not know if I didn’t tell or show you: She loves to get spanked. Hard. She spreads out on a rug and meows until you start slapping her tail bone. It’s quite disturbing for people who don’t know her.

*Dim Sum didn’t come home last night after being in the yard all day, though we did find a dead gopher at our door this morning. We’re hoping she sees this profile on her iPhone and realizes she’s loved and missed…

**UPDATE** Dim Sum was found at 1:30pm PST stuck in a tree, 25 feet above. Watch for an upcoming post on the rescue!

Dimsum looks like a piece of sushi! She’s so cute. I love her story. My cat Onyx has a similar love of plastic bags and rubber bands. Silly kitties.

And yes, she does look peculiarly asian…
