How I got my name: My first family named me Jake before they abandoned me at the shelter. When my Mom adopted me she kept my name to try to make me feel more comfortable — everything else was so new.

San Francisco's Wild Parrots Overwhelm Rescue Groups

In 1989, Mark Bittner noticed four parrots, seemingly living wild, in San Francisco's public gardens on Telegraph Hill. Bittner quickly became enamored with the birds, who just as quickly started to produce offspring — within three years the flock of four became 26.

Even though Bittner fed and cared for the birds, forming complex relationships with them, he has always been adamant about their wildness, insisting that without him the birds would survive in the wilds of San Francisco. And they have. After moving out of Telegraph Hill in 1999, the birds have continued to flourish in the city. So much so that it's caused a bit of a problem amongst the local bird rescue community.
