Mutts Rule!
I love all dogs, but I admit that mutts have an especially strong hold over my heart. How can you not love an underdog? So, I was pleased as punch to read about Otis and Diesel, two mixed breed dogs who competed at an American Kennel Club sponsored dog
show at the Mattaponi Kennel Club in Virginia. The dogs were the only two out of 40 dogs in the show that were mutts, and it’s the first time in 125 years that non-pure bred dogs, or “All American” dogs as they AKC is calling them, were allowed to participate!
According to the Washington Post, Otis is “the result of an illicit tryst between a purebred husky and a
rakish Lab-chow neighbor dog” and Diesel is a black lab mix. While purebred dogs will still be judged on breed standards, All American dogs will be judged on skill-based standards like agility, rally, and obedience.
Diesel and Otis competed in the category of rally. Diesel ended up not being able to qualify for the advanced round, but Otis made up all proud by not only qualifying, but winning third in the competition.
Hell yes for mutt kind!
