Hooray for Half Shells!

Turtles

As much as I love all things fuzzy and cuddly, I'm a sucker for a cute turtle.  I'm not sure if it's their wrinkly faces or the fact that they're, in essence, reptilian mobile homes, but I always smile when there's a slowpoke in the room.

So, did you know that yesterday, May 23rd, was Celebrate World Turtle Day!  While you may have forgotten to celebrate, that doesn't mean you can't still show your taste for terrapin's by sending someone an e-card or educate yourself, friends and family about the hazards of the capture and over collection of pet turtles.

Turtles captured in the wild as opposed to being bred in captivity tend to be dehydrated and prone to disease as
a result of the stress when captured and transported. In addition, support of the wild catch/pet trade in
box turtles may further threaten their numbers in the wild (plus, taking
in native turtles is illegal in many states). If you're really serious about caring for a turtle, an alternate
source are shelters or rescue groups like American Tortoise Rescue.

Just remember to bone up on pet turtle care before you bring a half shell home.
