This Just In: Some People Hate Their Pets
WTF AP?! What is up with this article about people who have “problem pets” and wish they would just runaway or die? I know that some parents probably feel this way about their kids, but do we see articles about parents who hate their kids, begrudgingly raising them while wishing them dead? I hope not.
The saddest part of the article is this paragraph: “Still, many can’t bring themselves to dump their wayward animals in
shelters. Instead, they pay sky-high vet bills for intervention that
doesn’t work. They endure in-your-face barking rants in the middle of
the night or are startled awake by the routine hacking of hairballs.” As kelly-ell, an SFGate reader points out, it seems to imply that “dumping” an animal off at a shelter is the obvious option for someone with an unwanted pet.
If anything, the thing you should come away with from this article is that pets are living beings with individual personalities. You can’t make your cat a dog, or your dog be a baby. Dogs bark, birds squawk, and cats meow. Some more than others, some for apparently no other reason than because they wanna (like P. Kitty meowing in the hallway at 2 a.m. just cuz she can). And because they can’t communicate with us through words, animals will do things like pee in places they shouldn’t to get your attention. Sometimes it’s to tell you that they are sick. But sometimes, you just may never know why. Just like you can’t make your child into your dream human, your pet is who your pet is: as the “Facts of Life” song goes, “you take the good, you take the bad.” That’s just what being a pet owner is about.

wow. i mean WOW. that article is disgusting. i have 2 ‘special needs’ english bulldogs and 2 street cats, one of which has FIV. despite all of the care it takes to meet the needs of all of my animals, i couldn’t imagine missing a day of the past several years that i’ve had with them. their cute little furry faces light up every minute! and the love that they give back just can’t be measured! when you take in an animal, you have a responsibility to take care of that little creature who is depending on you! you’re right, you take the good and you take the bad, and in my experience the good very much outweighs the bad!
These people, as well as those that adopt a child and then want to “return” them because they have problems whether emotional and/or physical, make my faith in humanity dwindle to near non existence. How can you adopt a living being and not expect there to be a possibility of problems? Pets are not toys or lawn ornaments, or household decorations! /rant over.
such a good post! acquiring animals is a commitment, and one you have total control of going into it. it’s not like getting an autistic kid, where you can’t tell if they’re autistic until they’re born. you get to meet the animal, socialize with it a bit, and then make your decision…
