I Love You Man, But Not the Dog

My post about Butters, the Steve Buscemi look-a-like reminded my friend John about a controversial movie dog, Anwar Sadat, a puggle who appears in the Jason Segel vehicle, "I Love You Man." In the movie, Segel's character owns the dog and explains that he named it Anwar Sadat after the former president of Egypt "because they look exactly alike."

Well, not everyone is amused by the comparison. Sadat's daughter, Rokaya Sadat, has filed a lawsuit against Dreamworks, the makers of the film, and is outraged by the movie's flippant use of her father's name. Her lawyer tells the AP, "This is a disaster, a serious affront. This has caused serious psychological and moral damages to the plaintiff, as President Sadat is a prominent figure in the Arab history in general and in Egyptian history in particular."

To give a little cultural context to the hoopla, calling someone a dog in Islamic culture is an extreme insult; they are thought to be unclean and a source of moral danger. Knowing this, one can empathize with the daughter of the Nobel Peace Prize winner who was assassinated in 1981.

When the movie was released in Egypt, the scene explaining the dog's name was cut from the film, but Maswary.com discovered the scene and publicized it. The dog, whose name is apparently Anwar Sadat in real life according to the movie's credits, could not be reached for comment.
