Neko Chigura vs. DWR Woven Pet Basket

Moderncat wrote an excellent post about Neko Chigura, which are Japanese cat beds made out of rice straws. Straw work like this is a traditional Japanese art form, and which is beautiful as well as functional — straw stays cool in the summer and keeps in heat in the winter. Unfortunately, as noted on Moderncat, the beds aren’t yet available in the U.S. Too bad cuz they’re not so expensive for a well-made, handcrafted item (about the equivalent of $43-$184).

If you’re interested in something similar that is available in the U.S., check out Design Within Reach’s Woven Pet Basket, created by Heather Dalrymple, who uses a traditional Shaker weaving style. Also dome-shaped, her rattan baskets are $135 and come equipped with a removable fleece lining.
