Phew! Sigh of relief for Baltic, the German Shepherd-mix that was recently saved from being trapped on drifting river ice for more than four days. The dog traveled for nearly 125-miles and was rescued 20 miles out to sea by scientists who intially thought he was a seal!
Several attempts were made to rescue Baltic as he drifted further down the Vistula River in Poland, but it wasn't until he made it out of the river mouth and into the sea that the rescue occurred. Scientists of the Institute of Meteorology and Water Management happened to spot him and eventually were able to be bring him onto their ship.
The owner of the lucky dog is unknown, and if he remains unclaimed, the ship will adopt him as its mascot.

Closer to home, Vernon, another German Shepherd mix that was rescued from the L.A. River on January 22, remains unclaimed at the Southeast Area Animal Control Authority. Don't worry, though, if at the end of Vernon's 10-day quarantine period he is still not claimed by his owners, there is a mile-long list of people who are interested in adopting him.
