A Stylish Cat Perch Made from an Ikea Changing Table
Pet Projects
I’ve been in love with this cat perch since the day I found it on Kim Johnson’s Flickr page. When we launched this site I knew that the first DIY project I wanted to present was this. Kim, co-author of interior design blog, Desire to Inspire, was kind enough to let us share just how she turned an Ikea baby changing table into the cutest cat perch around.
What You’ll Need:
- Ikea Sniglar
- Styrofoam
- Batting
- Fabric of your choice
What to Do:
- Before putting the changing table together, cut the necessary pieces in half. Kim’s BF used a chop saw to cut the frame and an exacto knife to cut the particleboard shelves.
- Prime and then paint the wood to desired color. Kim chose yellow at first, but it was way to bright so she went with white.
- Cut styrofoam and batting to size.
- Upholster the padding with your fabric. Kim, surprisingly, doesn’t sew at all. Instead she stapled the batting to the styrofoam, wrapped the fabric around this, and shoved it into the shelf. The cushions fit in so snuggly that she didn’t have to affix the fabric in any way. Those of you with sewing skills may want to use your talents, but it isn’t necessary.
- Anchor the perch onto the wall by screwing a small strip of wood into the wall so that it will sit under each of the changing table’s shelves. Then screw the shelf into the strip of wood. For added support, put a screw at an angle through each side of the back of the frame and into the wall.

And for those of you who want to use the other half of the changing table for something other than the cats, Kim’s BF turned it into a narrow display for their plants.

Love! As soon as I move I’m making my kitties and my plants one of these!
Thanks for letting us share Kim!
